Osteopathic treatment pre and post pregnancy is focused on the maintenance of the whole body.  Osteopathy is a manual therapy to is patient centred approach to restoring proper alignment to improve the body’s homeostatic function and its ability to maintain health.

During pregnancy the maternal body undergoes various structural changes to accommodate the growing fetus. As pregnancy progresses, these changes have a profound effect on the daily functioning of the pregnant patient. The release of such hormones as relaxin and progesterone changes the body’s physiology, which can exaggerate anatomic stresses in the maternal body.  Relaxin, which starts to be released around the 10th to 12th week of pregnancy, causes laxity within the sacroiliac joints and pubic symphysis to allow for widening of the pelvic girdle. As the pelvis begins to tilt anteriorly, the lumbar lordosis increases, which places an increased stretch on the extensor muscles of the trunk and on the sacroiliac joints, leading to increased low back and pelvic pain. Furthermore, as the fetus descends into the widened pelvis, the increased pressure on the lumbosacral plexus may induce sciatic pain and paraesthesia in the leg.

The trauma of the birth process on the maternal body can be dramatic, and may lead to altered biomechanics, which in turn may lead to variety of persistent neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, low back pain and sciatica, sacroiliac joint problems.  One of the biggest barriers to accessing treatment for post pregnancy is finding child friendly venues.  The Queensland Osteopathic Clinic is a place where mothers can come to get treated while our friendly front desk staff look after your children.  We have always been family orientated and have two waiting room, one for the adults and one for the kids.  This allows mothers some valuable time to focus on their own health and wellbeing with our Osteopathic practitioners.
